- Trip Date: 19th / 20th August 2015
- Location: Manchester, UK
- Mode of Transport: Virgin Trains
- Accommodation: Malmaison, Manchester.
When my friend said she’d like to do the Coronation Street Tour in Manchester and I didn’t laugh… She knew I was the one to accompany her on this lil trip up North…I love Manchester!
My only requirement was that we stay in the Malmaison Hotel( My fav chain of hotels) and we actually found a great deal on their website so all boxes ticked.
We travelled on the 10:20 train from London Euston on Wednesday and #arrivedawesome into Manchester Piccadilly on Virgin Trains service at 12:30pm, copping £20 tickets each way.
We did the short two minute walk from the station to Malmaison’s revolving doors and into their delightful foyer. ( Yet another reason why the Mal is a must!) I haven’t been to the Mal for a few years and used to hold a lot of events at the Mal itself and was where we chose to stay, so fond memories ensured some repeat business!
Malmaison just has that laid back but vibesy atmosphere, from entering the reception lobby, you know you’ve picked the right place. It’s quirky, sultry and hip all at once and in the city centre so everything is easily accessible by foot in the city centre with an abundance of taxi’s outside.
A mobile Prosecco bar ( Always a good idea in my book) and the tram were located just behind the Malmaison.
Once back, the ladies kindly ordered us a taxi to our destination. 10 minutes later we arrived at the infamous Coronation Street. Probably worth mentioning that Manchester City Centre does have its fair share of traffic, so where possible, grab a Street Car minicab with their amazing prices and perhaps not an Uber.
Despite it raining constantly, we still managed to enjoy the experience. Parka’s at the ready! It’s probably worth mentioning that the tour is actually due to close in December 2015 for the final time. Filming no longer happens here and has since been rebuilt elsewhere in Manchester with a purpose built set to replicate what you are familiar with on your TV screens.
The tour is only £17 and although lasts just under an hour – you can actually stay around after on the Street and take photos for as long as you like. During the tour you do get to go into the Rovers Return, where they take a photo of you pulling a pint, which you can purchase after at either £8 or two for £5 each. Mack was our tour guide and absolutely brilliant. Tickets can be purchased here from TicketMaster
It’s likely the new set will eventually allow tours on also – though how they facilitated tours whilst filming was scheduled is beyond me! Our brilliant host was Mack – who was both charismatic and funny and made you feel like he was giving you every possible piece of gossip from The Street. He also happily snapped us in some photos, which was handy!
Once back at the Mal….
our rooms were ready and my upgrade to one of the suites was great. Impressive space with living area and a separate bedroom area in those rich deep romantic tones. My friend who I travelled up with found her room was opposite someone with a persistent barking dog, but reception were great in getting her moved with no problems at all.
I popped into the city centre to do some shopping before getting changed and jumping in a Street Car to Spinningfields. A cousin of mine had highly recommended a restaurant, Neighbourhood. (There are a good few places to eat in this part of town, if you do get stuck finding somewhere to try.)
When I arrived at Neighbourhood, I could definitely see why he’d enjoyed it on previous visits. I loved not only the decor and atmosphere but when the menu was handed to me, I was excited to try some dishes. World class customer service from the staff and a really great meal. I’ll definitely be back.
My meal consisted of chicken lollipops followed closely by a ribeye steak which were all divine! But the desserts were completely original! I wanted to try everything, but uh that wasn’t humanly possible. I had the assorted box of doughnuts and my friend indulged in the sweet burger and fries – which was a chocolate, almond and cherry burger with churros fries.
Back to the hotel and in for some drinks at Smoak, The Mal’s bar attached to the hotel. Again, the staff were brilliant. Finished off a perfect night with a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rose’ and they made me their version of the Pornstar Martini… 🙂 a very grateful Lerease!
After sinking into the most comfortable bed ever – I was almost upset I’d only booked here for one night, that moment of regret at breakfast! Just means another visit is on the cards – soooon!
